Here is what you need to know about PRP for Hair loss

Here is what you need to know about PRP for Hair loss

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is the ultimate bio-regeneration treatment which provides a multitude of healing and revitalising benefits.

Hair loss and thinning is common. About 50 million men and 30 million women have hair loss which is especially common as we age. There are many different hair treatments available, however some are based on science.

PRP is a great treatment option for hair loss as scientific evidence has proven its efficacy for increasing hair count, hair thickness, and extending the growth phase of the hair cycle.

What is PRP?

To understand how PRP works, it is important to be aware of the role that platelets play in healing. Platelets release growth factors, which are delivered to the scalp and hair follicles to stabilise hair loss and rejuvenate miniaturised hair follicles.

What does the procedure involve?

  • A small volume of blood is collected in the same way as a standard blood test.
  • The sample is placed in a centrifuge.
  • The centrifuge spins the blood, separating the components.
  • A medical professional extracts the platelets into a syringe.
  • The PRP is injected into the superficial skin layers using a very fine needle after numbing gel has been applied.

The process takes approximately one hour.

What is the science?

Studies have shown that three or more treatment sessions may improve hair density and/or hair count for anywhere between six months and one year. The general consensus  is that receiving treatments every six months on a long term basis are optimal for continuing to stimulate the growth factors and stem cells that are associated with regrowth and stopping hair fallout.

What are the results?

Patients notice a decrease in hair shedding, and a more upright hair position, followed by early regrowth of a visible hair and increased hair numbers. For hair follicles that were producing hairs not visible to human eyes, these follicles will be rejuvenated to start producing a more healthy hair. However the hair that exists the scalp will be like all new hairs, softer and thinner than a mature hair. It usually takes six to twelve months to judge the results of PRP visually in the mirror or in normal photography.

What are potential risks & complication with PRP

PRP procedures are deemed to be a low risk procedure and considered safe. The material that is injected back into the patient is a portion of their own blood which reduces the risk. However with any procedure where a needle is placed in the body, there is a risk of infection, bleeding, bruising and nerve damage. These are rare side effect and should be weighed against possible benefits.

Who is PRP not suitable for?

Patients with the following current conditions or medical treatments may not be suitable candidates for the procedure

  • Platelet disorders and blood disorders

  • Cancer, Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy

  • Acute and Chronic Infections

  • Anti‐coagulation therapy

  • Use of oral corticosteroids within ten days prior to PRP procedure

  • Prior injection of long acting steroids within 1 month (at the PRP injection site)

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Before and after my PRP appointment

At Aesthetic Code we aim to ensure you get optimal results from your treatment. Pre-procedure instructions will be sent to you 7 days before your appointment, outlining how to prepare for your treatment. Upon arrival to your appointment you will be asked to complete a health questionnaire to check for possible contraindications to the PRP. During the consultation we will discuss your history with hair loss and develop an individual plan. The procedure will then be explained and a consent form signed. After the procedure you will receive some post treatment care instructions to promote the healing process.
